The frame is the support that holds everything together. In choosing a frame, the goal is to bring out the inherent beauty of the piece while not overpowering the artwork. The frame brings everything together- it is the icing on the cake.
Matting is often considered an element of aesthetics and design. While this is one of its functions, the true purpose of a mat is to protect the art. Without a mat, dust, pollution, humidity, etc. will collect over time between the glass and art potentially damaging the artwork’s attractiveness as well as value.
Glass plays an important role in protecting your art. Ultraviolet rays, invisible to the eye, will fade and discolor most printed images. UV rays can not only come from direct sunlight but also a bright room with indirect sunlight. The different types of glass absorb varying levels of UV light waves. “Regular” glass absorbs approximately 40% of UV rays while conservation and museum glass filter about 98% of UV rays. Museum glass is a non-reflective glass.
